About The Workshop

The Workshop uses various open data sources to generate wind profiles:

Terrain & Exposure

Terrain categories are determined using hosted land cover maps, analyzed according to the relevant design standard (EN 1991-1-4 or BS EN 1991-1-4).

• Morphological zones: Urban Morphological Zones (European Environment Agency, licensed under CC 4.0)
• Lake data (Ireland): Lakes & Reservoirs - National 250k Map Of Ireland (Tailte Éireann, licensed under CC 4.0)
• Lake data (UK): UK Lakes Portal (UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, licensed under OGL 3)
• Country boundaries: OSM Countries GeoJSON (© OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under ODbL)

Orography & Elevation

Orographic effects are assessed using elevation data, analyzed according to the relevant design standard.

Basic Wind Velocity

Basic wind velocity maps are created by Shapemaker based on the maps and values provided in the relevant national annexes to EN 1991-1-4.

Your privacy is important to us. Here is how we handle your data:

Location Data

We do not store or log any coordinates you enter. Your location data is processed only to generate the wind profile and is not retained on our servers after the calculation is complete. We do not share your coordinates with third parties.

Data Processing

When you generate a wind profile, your coordinates are sent to our servers to query elevation and terrain data from the sources listed above. The results are returned directly to your browser, and no record of your query is kept.

Third-Party Services

Mapbox: If you use the location picker map, your interaction with the map is handled by Mapbox and is subject to Mapbox's privacy policy. If this is a concern, you can enter coordinates directly without using the map.

We use Amplitude, an analytics service, to understand how people use The Workshop. This helps us improve the service and prioritize new features.

What we track

• Page views and navigation patterns
• Feature usage (which design standards are popular, download rates)
• Session information (new vs returning users)
• General geographic region (derived from IP address, not your input)

What we do NOT track

• Your coordinates or location data that you input
• Any personally identifiable information
• Site altitude or other specific site parameters you enter

Your Choice

You can decline analytics tracking using the banner at the bottom of the page when you first visit. The Workshop works fully without analytics enabled.
